If you’ve blamed your ancestors for your facial wrinkles, think again. At New Jersey’s Robert Zubowski MD Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery we’ve learned that chronic stress like divorce, or taking antidepressants, even weight change, can also promote aging. A study revealed this in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The study followed several identical twins who you would expect to age at the same rate. The research showed that a divorced twin looked two years older than his or her married, single or widowed sibling. Other contributors included the use of antidepressants and weight. In those twins less than 40 years old, the heavier twin was perceived to be older. Over 40, the heavier twin looked younger. Researchers noted that losing abnormal amounts of weight not only has unhealthy consequences, but promotes facial aging.
At the Robert Zubowski MD Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we continually introduce programs to help you look your best. While regular facial massages from our expert massage therapists may not eliminate all your wrinkle producing stressors, it’s a good start. At our Paramus, NJ center we believe a good skincare program, supported by our medical grade skincare products, fosters a refreshed appearance. We also offer Botox®, and the most effective, longer lasting facial fillers for non-invasive facial rejuvenation. And, when surgery is the best solution to reverse your facial aging, we can provide you with a customized plan.
We hold regular complimentary Saturday breakfast seminars, where you can explore options. Pre-registration is essential since attendance is limited. To learn about how we can help you “turn back the hands of time” and for the date and time of our next seminar, please contact Ann Carbone, our Paramus, NJ Practice Coordinator at 201-261-7550.

The number of people having cosmetic plastic surgery has tripled since 1992, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Breast augmentation has increased 53 percent and liposuction 31 percent. Today, plastic surgery is not just for the rich and famous; increasingly it is seen as a common intervention to basically normal bodies.
And the average age of the patients continues to drop. The ASPS reports the average age of patients has dropped from 34 to 17. In 2008, 219,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients 13 to 19 years of age, and almost 39,000 were surgical procedures such as nose reshaping, breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction and tummy tucks.
More young people are having plastic surgery than ever. In a 2008 study commissioned by the American Society for Aesethic Plastic Surgery, men and women ages 18 to 24 had the highest approval rating for cosmetic surgery.
What used to be reserved for adults and cosmetic purposes, slowly creeped into the world of those under 18. It’s critical that we take extra care with younger patients considering procedures.
All teens still need to undergo a full consultation with a specialist to make sure they are in a good state of physical and mental health before they go under the knife. In some cases, the teen simply isn’t mature enough to handle the potential side effects and risks associated with the surgery, and may not have realistic goals about the outcome.

You may be among the scores of plastic surgery patients accustomed to compliments about your “ageless” countenance. If the acclaims have stopped and you’ve noticed facial sagging and a flabbier neck, maybe it’s time for a redo.
With improved surgical techniques, a properly performed facelift can last longer than a decade. At the Robert Zubowski MD Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Paramus, NJ, we routinely perform primary and secondary facelifts.
Reasons for a do-over are as diverse as the personalities of the patients who request them. But at our Paramus, NJ Center, many of our patients cite two reasons most often. The first is obvious. Time marches on, and after years of enjoyment, age has caught up with the initial benefits of the procedure. The other reason is that the patient was never happy with the original results.
Some plastic surgeons perform the same procedure in the same manner on every patient, not taking into account the physical uniqueness of each face. Others may not properly evaluate the underlying musculature, working with it to provide a longer lasting result. And still others may simply tighten the face and thin the neck to give a less natural, “wind swept” look. With over 20 years of experience in plastic surgery and general surgery (we are board certified in both), we’ve developed an artistic eye that allows us to customize each patient’s facelift.
At the Robert Zubowski MD Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we counsel patients that undergoing a facelift is not the final step in their facial rejuvenation. That’s why we include post-surgical lymphatic drainage massages in the procedure’s cost. Our skincare department can develop a home care program thoughtfully built around medical grade skincare products that will hasten your recovery and keep the compliments coming for years to come.

Plastic Surgeons Oppose Proposed Cosmetic Surgery Tax Say It Discriminates Against Patients Marks First Time Country to Levy Tax on Patients for Medical Procedures
This week, democratic leaders in the Senate unveiled their proposal for overhauling the health care system, which included a new 5% tax on elective cosmetic procedures. Senate Democrats argue that the tax, which was a surprise addition to the sweeping 2,074-page bill, will generate $5.8 billion over the next 10 years to be put towards the bill’s estimated $849 billion price tag. However, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) oppose this tax as discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective.
What’s at stake? This is a discriminatory tax. According to the Aesthetic Society Annual Statistics, 91% of all cosmetic procedures are requested by women . This will not have considerable consequences on the wealthiest patients but, as usual, affects the middle class. Working women, soccer moms, and scores of others who carefully save and budget to improve their appearance and self esteem will be penalized for doing so. Procedures such as breast reduction that have been cited in the literature for improving self esteem and quality of life would be taxed as well. This provision places physicians in the role of tax collector and holds physicians liable should an individual fail or refuse to pay the tax. Is that the relationship you want with your medical provider?
Medical care should not be used as a tool to fix broken finances. As doctors our first concern always needs to be patient health and safety.
Please help us stop this silly and penetrative tax. To find your State Senator please click here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm We urge you to personally inform the government that you are against this tax – together we can fight for your right to no government interference in medical care and stop this discriminatory measure against women!
