Patients Can Undergo Otoplasty At Our Paramus, New Jersey Center

Ear surgery, called otoplasty is most often carried out to reposition and contour protruding ears. Dr. Zubowski and his staff at their Paramus, New Jersey office recognize that prominent ears can be the cause of great psychological and emotional distress to both children and adults alike. Because the ears are almost fully developed by age 4 or 5 this is the most common age at which otoplasty is performed. Correction before the child enters school can avoid much of the “teasing” associated with this deformity. However, it is also common to perform surgery on adults as well.

The goal of otoplasty is to produce symmetrical, natural-looking ears with no obvious signs surgery has been performed. To accomplish this, at his New Jersey Plastic Surgery Center, Dr. Zubowski will make a small incision in the natural crease behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage. He will then sculpt and shape the ear by molding the cartilage to the desired shape and distance from the scalp.

The procedure generally takes about two hours and can be performed under sedation, although general anesthesia is often used, particularly for younger children. A light dressing similar to a headband will be applied for the first week and then only at bedtime for the next few weeks. Although recovery can very from individual to individual, the ears should look “normal” within 2 to 3 weeks.
