Gynecomastia Treatment in our Bergen County, New Jersey Plastic Surgery Center

Gynecomastia, or enlargement of the male breast is more common than you might think.  According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery it affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of all males.  While it might be due to such things as medications, hormonal imbalance and genetics, most often its cause is unknown.

At the Robert Zubowski, MD Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in New Jersey, Dr. Zubowski understands the psychological and physical impact gynecomastia can have on teenagers and adults alike.   Like in the female breast, the male breast contains a variable combination of glandular and fatty tissue.  The distribution and quantity of this tissue will largely determine the type of treatment necessary.  At the Robert Zubowski MD, Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery a detailed evaluation is first performed to exclude the above mentioned causes;if a patient is near puberty several months of observation may be needed to see if the growth resolves.  For those patients who require treatment, the options will include ultrasonic liposuction, surgical removal of the gland and/orexcess skin, or a combination of these procedures. Ultrasonic liposuction can be curative for those patients whose skin quality is good but have predominantly fatty or diffusely glandular breasts. Dr. Zubowski's treatment of choice when there is a focally dense area of breast tissue behind the areola, is to make a direct surgical excision with a small incision in the lower half of the areola.  If there is also a significant amount of skin then skin removal to shape and tighten the breast is required.  The goal of treatment is to remove a sufficient amount of breast tissue to minimize pain and recurrence, yet allow for a normal post-operative breast appearance.
