Cosmetic Surgery Statistics

New Jersey Plastic Surgery – Bergen County & Paramus
Cosmetic Surgery Statistics

Each year the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS) collects data from plastic surgeons around the country and compiles a list of cosmetic surgery statistics. The statistics below represent 2007 data submitted by surgeons from multiple specialties, including plastic surgery and dermatology.

Most Popular Cosmetic Treatments

According to the ASPS, the top five most popular cosmetic procedures in 2007 were liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and breast reduction. The top five most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments were BOTOX injections, hyaluronic acid injections, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, and IPL laser treatment.

Cosmetic Surgery by Gender

Of the 11.7 million cosmetic (surgical and non-surgical) procedures performed in the U.S. in 2007, 10.6 million were performed on women. Cosmetic surgery procedures for men accounted for a paltry nine percent of the total procedures performed.

The most popular procedure among women in 2007 was by far breast augmentation surgery, while liposuction scored the top spot among men.

Cosmetic Surgery by Age Group

While cosmetic surgery is on the rise among teenagers and young adults, men and women of ages 35 to 50 received the largest percentage of cosmetic procedures, nearly half of the total cosmetic treatments performed in 2007. The 18 and under age group received just two percent of the cosmetic treatments performed in 07′, the mostly popular treatments being laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, and chemical peel.

Cosmetic Surgery Cost – Quick Facts

In 2007, patients spent upwards of 13 billion dollars on cosmetic surgery treatments. According to national averages, the most costly individual cosmetic treatment is facelift surgery; the average cost of facelift surgery is $6.792. Breast reduction ranks as the second priciest procedure at an average cost of $5,417. The cheapest cosmetic treatment is microdermabrasion, which costs approximately $100-150 per session.

Cosmetic Surgery Trends

Based on 2007 data, one of the major trends in cosmetic enhancement is the growing popularity of non-surgical, non-invasive treatments. According to the ASPS, of the 11.7 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2007, an overwhelming majority (82%) were non-surgical. In fact, over the last decade the total number of non-surgical procedures has increased by more than 700 percent, as compared to an increase of just over 100 percent in surgical procedures.
