Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed across the globe. Liposuction is specifically used for patients that have small amounts of unwanted fat pockets from just about any part of the body. These patients have often attempted (and failed) to eliminate this fat on their own with diet and exercise.
Obese and severely obese patients are not good candidates for liposuction due to the sheer volume of fat that would need to be removed, the excess skin that would remain after surgery, and the potential surgical complications caused by these factors. On the other hand, if there is an overweight person that has been able to maintain their weight for several years they may be a candidate for liposuction if their goal is simply to eliminate fat in a localized problem area like the hips or thighs. It’s important to understand that liposuction should be used as a body contouring aid and not as a weight loss tool. You can look at the scale and see those last 10 or 15 pounds that need to go away and diet and exercise your heart out because you are convinced that last weight is living on those love handles or saddlebags. But you can also have as little as one to two pounds removed directly from those areas and still see a drastic result.
Liposuction is performed by liquefying fat cells in a certain area and suctioning them out through a tubing system called a cannula that is attached to a suction device. This cannula is then inserted into the fat by incisions made into the skin. Patients may be asleep or awake with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine.
There are several different liposuction methods available, including tumescent liposuction, where a diluted amount of lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the fat causing it to be swollen and firm, or tumescent, then suctioned. This technique allows for just a local anesthetic and eliminates the need to be put completely asleep.
Liposuction results are typically permanent but if you gain a significant amount of weight after your surgery you are likely to have that fat redeposited into other areas. For example, if you usually carry weight in your thighs and have that removed through liposuction then gain a significant amount of weight, your weight will now redistribute to the rest of your body, including the treatment areas.
There are risks to this procedure, as well as pleasing results. Some of the risks are dimpling, indentations, possible infection, swelling, loose skin that may need to be removed, lidocaine overdose, and even death. In the hands of a skilled New Jersey cosmetic surgeon, such as Dr. Robert Zubowski, these risks are rare but do exist, so carefully consider your decision before committing yourself.
