Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags and reduce puffiness of the upper eyelid. Some individuals may experience obscured vision due to excess skin or fat deposits on or near the eyelids. These individuals may benefit greatly from a blepharoplasty. Ideal blepharoplasty candidates include individuals who are in good physical and mental health, at least 18 years old, aware of the risks, and have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure.
Individuals who are considering a blepharoplasty should be in good health, which includes being free of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure. Certain ophthalmic conditions such as glaucoma and dry eye may preclude a blepharoplasty. Ideally, candidates should be non-smokers, as smoking slows the healing time and can increase the risk of infection. While most blepharoplasty patients are over the age of 35, the procedure can be performed on younger individuals. Individuals under the age of 18 are not typically considered to be good candidates for the procedure, unless vision is severely obstructed or the construction of the eyelid is causing other physical problems.
Being aware of possible risks is extremely important for an individual undergoing any type of cosmetic procedure. Blepharoplasty risks include the reaction to the anesthesia; decreased sensation the eyelid; excess tearing; dryness, stinging, burning, itching, and/or a gritty sensation in the eyes; and retrobulbar hematoma. While retrobulbar hematoma is rare, it causes bleeding behind the eye and can result in vision loss.
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) candidates should have realistic expectations about what the procedure will and will not correct. Though there are other cosmetic procedures to help smooth wrinkles, erase dark under-eye circles, and reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, a blepharoplasty will not help in these areas. Blepharoplasty patients should be individuals specifically seeking to remove excess skin and/or fat deposits from the eyelids for aesthetic and/or medical reasons.
